Dolly Parton is on the front cover of the most recent Incite magazine at work. Thatʻs the librarian magazine published for members of ALIA. She has a foundation called Imagination Library that gives children in four countries a book per month from birth until their fifth birthday. This encourages the child to read with help from their family. Imagination Library has joined with a not for profit called United Way Australia to launch the initiative here in Australia. One of the first places to benefit is Doveton, an extremely underprivileged and socially disadvantaged area in the outer South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. I know because this is where I grew up, went to school, and the first library I belonged to was at Autumn Place, Doveton. This initiative of giving children the chance to start reading and build their own library at home gives me hope for the future of young readers in Doveton and other impoverished areas. Dolly Parton is a great performer and a staunch humanitarian and philanthropist. Sheʻs done alright for a dirt poor girl from the Smoky Mountains. Thank you very much for your tireless work in entertainment but even moreso, your inspiration to other dirt poor girls who just love to read.
